with the Family / Working Tax Credits system which is means tested?
It seems parents who claim child benefit are being labelled scroungers, but do you know anyone who doesn%26#039;t claim it, regardless of income?
Is it best not to answer a question about child benefit if you clearly know nothing about it?
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
Ive seen some answers that imply that CHB claimants are scroungers. Its ignorance. Even Gordon Brown will get child benefit for his kids........but I bet his details arent on the discs.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
I know that everyone is entitled to child benefit until their child reaches a certain age.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
yea all parents are entitled to child benefit to call them scroungers is stupid
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
have a star
the upper classes claim it even royalty
i wish i never had it put into my bank account , i was happy with getting at the post office

According to the BBC website there is almost a 100% uptake for Child Benefit. I certainly don%26#039;t know anyone who hasn%26#039;t bothered to claim it even those who could live without it.
I think some people see the word benefit %26amp; jump straight on their soap box.

I was just thinking that lol.I get child benefit and family tax credits but it%26#039;s definately not scrounging even rich people get it I wonder does Posh Spice claim it.lol As for family tax credits the more you earn the less you get which makes sense.

WELL SAID!!!!
we receive child benefit for our two boys. i have worked from the age of 18 till 26. my hubby has worked for the last 30 years.
he is in a well paid job and I%26#039;m now a career for our son%26#039;s (both special needs).
people are so quick to judge and then end up with egg on their face when they get the facts SOOOO wrong!!

The people who say these things either have no kids or just haven%26#039;t got a clue.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
It appears some people are getting their facts wrong.
I know people from a vast range of income levels who claim it, not just those who are unemployed or on low incomes.
Even Princess Anne claimed it for her children!
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
I%26#039;ll be claiming it next year. Yippee
Even you and George can claim it when you have kids.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
Every child gets child benefit, regardless of parents income. I get it for my two.
Just logged on, so I see from your Q we are getting the usual $hit from people who nothing about a subject? Idiots.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
I think they must be confusing it as like you say everyone is entitled to child benefit.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
Nice question. IMHO, people who can%26#039;t even fathom out the difference between Child Benefit (paid to everyone with a child of 16 and under) and Tax Credits aren%26#039;t even worth worrying about. If they can%26#039;t be bothered to find out the difference, ignore them!
Mind you, it is a fairly confusing system. Even the Child Tax Credit and Working Families Tax Credits are two different things!
All I know is that I%26#039;m entitled to Child Benefit and a tiny amount of Child Tax Credit (hardly worth it), but not entitled to the Working Families Tax Credits. Hey ho!

Morning Mrs. and to all the girls.
I have just looked back at what you were refering to. I can%26#039;t believe people are that stupid. Everyone is entitled to it. You pay into the system, you get it back. They aren%26#039;t scroungers, most mothers go back to work, after having children. As someone said, Princess Ann claimed it, it was her right.
Edit: Me and my husband both work, no children. We get Working Tax Credit (鎷?36.85 per month)
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
Everyone with kids gets it. I have piles of money, and my wife still collects child benifit, and it doesn%26#039;t amount to much. If someone was trying to pay me that, I wouldn%26#039;t even get out of bed.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
Every single British Child, regardless of class or parental income, has a right to Child Benefit.
I don%26#039;t know any parent who does not claim this for their children.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
WELL SAID ....
Everyone with children get it so i don%26#039;t see why they labelled us as scroungers ..
If they have kids and don%26#039;t claim it then more fool them. Even the stars claim it
Mine pays for my daughters school dinners...my Baby%26#039;s nappies %26amp; milk.. so it all goes on the kids
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
To all those who are against Child Benefit - ask your parents if they claimed it. I%26#039;ll bet they did!
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
I don%26#039;t understand the problem people seem to have with child benefit all of a sudden. Every parent is entitled to it and no I don%26#039;t know anyone who is entitled and doesn%26#039;t claim it. If people want to get on their high horses about where their tax money is going maybe they should complain about the tax money used to fund the royal family rather than complain about it being put towards helping families to raise children.
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
whoops can of worms her i think iwill stop while i am ahead
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
I have no problem with benefits for those that need them. The child benefits system is outdated and I believe it should be means tested, as you said, everyone is entitled to claim is that bit that gets me. As an example, a football player earns 鎷?00,000+ per week, do they honestly NEED 鎷?8.10?
Are people confusing Child Benefit?
It is very difficult for anybody with a genuine understanding of the welfare system to answer this question without sounding somewhat disingenuous. That said, I will attempt to give you an answer that both suits your question AND the reality of the topic at hand...
First, a question of my own:
Why would ANYBODY care what collecting welfare makes you look like?!!?!
Right, now that I have the snobbery issue off my chest, let us move on...
Welfare is made available to those that the state deems in need of it based on such things as means testing, as you rightly point out. This however causes a few problems:
1. Who decides what the level being means tested for should be?
2. Who controls how much is awarded in each case?
3. Who foots the bill?
The answer to all three is, of course, SUPPOSED to be, the general public through their elected representatives in Parliament (see Congress in the US) although the reality is entirely different.
The government are assuming total control of questions one and two whilst ensuring that the general public pay the bills created regardless of whether or not they agree with the system or even want it!
So, when people are being forced to feel %26quot;dirty%26quot; for claiming a %26quot;perfectly normal everyday%26quot; government handout with almost no strings attached in terms of receiving it, one really should really be asking the question...
%26quot;Why does the government allow almost every household in the nation to earn money, pay taxation on it and then spread that taxation around to almost every household in the nation all over again, thus incurring massive collection, administration and accounting fees for money that was basically your hard earned cash in the first place?%26quot;
Now THAT would be a better question!
For those that care (or are still reading!), go and read about Ron Paul, a 10-term Texas Congressman, a gynaecologist with over 4,000 births behind him, a husband to his first and only wife for 50 years and THE ONLY SERIOUS POLITICAL CANDIDATE IN THE USA FOR DECADES.
Remember, if Ron Paul wins...The whole WORLD wins.
A peaceful democracy in the US is a better example for spreading democracy than the barrel of a gun and a sight more effective!

I don%26#039;t get why all the people who don%26#039;t have children have to have part of their wages given to those who do. I live in Japan now and people pay for their own children. If they can%26#039;t afford to keep them they don%26#039;t have them. I prefer this system to be honest. Maybe it%26#039;s just me but I don%26#039;t see the point in paying for other peoples kids if you can%26#039;t or don%26#039;t want to have them yourself.
I wasn%26#039;t implying that at all. I know that you probably work and I understand that you think you should be able to claim child benifits. I just feel sorry for those who can%26#039;t have children or never marry. Two of my great aunts spent the whole of their lives single and never had children. Do you honestly think that it%26#039;s right to have peoples taxes used for something that they will never bother with? Anyway, if you work why do you need child benefit anyway? My job isn%26#039;t all that well paid but at the same time I support my family well enough on it.
I don%26#039;t get the comment of the guy above. He has more than enough money yet still claims child benifits. Why? Wouldn%26#039;t that money be better spent on the pensioners who are struggling on their pitiful pensions? I understand the British get what you can out of the system attitude but don%26#039;t you realise that is why your taxes are so high.
