My partner wants to go part time in her job.?

We have 2 kids age 4 and 2. My parents are too old to take care of them in the afternoon now, and my partner Jo-anne now wants to go part time. We can not afford to pay childcare costs even with help from tax credits. Her employer has refused her request. What are our rights?

My partner wants to go part time in her job.?

All she can do is appeal, but if the Company she works for can prove that its not beneficial to them for her to only work part-time then there is nothing that you or any employment law can do.

Why doesn%26#039;t she try and find another job with part-time hours?

What about sending them to a pre-school instead of full time nursery in the afternoons? Its only about 鎷? per afternoon, and 5 sessions free for the one that is 4.

Is she with any union or anything. In my job if we have kids under 6 we can request a change of hours...

That is quite unreasonable... Did she have the same job when she was pregnant etc. I know if you want to return to work part time after having a baby they have to adhere to your requests even if it means you cant be in the same position you were before..

If the employer is only in need of a full-time employee, Joanne cannot force them to accomodate her request. (If she is employed by a larger company, she can talk to Human Resources to see if there are any part-time positions available. Many times employers would rather hire from within. Sorry I%26#039;m not much help; I have no idea where she works.)

I would check into programs for your 4 year old. Many times, depending on where you live, there are academic-based pre-k programs (HeadStart) that will accept her/him. There is a maximum income requirement to participate. (That%26#039;s what%26#039;s been hard for us. Although I%26#039;m a schoolteacher, I make too much to qualify for assistance... and you know we make TONS of money, lol. I pay about $100 for 3 days a week.)

As far as your 2 year old, check with your state for in-home childcare providers. Although they have to meet the same standards of a %26quot;daycare%26quot; facility, they may be more affordable. (My sitter in NM did this; she watched 3 kids and was wonderful. The state would come in on surprise visits to check things out. Her home was very clean and organized. She was very caring too.) The way the in-home situation worked was that the state paid the sitter rather than the parent.

Hope this gives you some ideas,

Mon :-)
